Oscar Ochieng

Oscar is the sixth born in a family of seven. Oscar’s mother passed away when he was in his second year of secondary school and since then life has been difficult for his whole family. Not only have they lost their mother but they have also lost a vital income and they are now entirely dependent on their father’s income which is difficult as he works on a casual basis as a builder.

He completed his Secondary level at Serani Secondary School in 2008 and managed to score an aggregate grade of C-. When Oscar completed his Secondary School, Initially, he was unable to acquire his Kenyan Certificate for Secondary School result slip because he had huge outstanding fees. As a result he had to find himself odd jobs like gardening, construction, digging bore holes for people so that he could pay the arrears.

Oscar’s eldest sister was forced to drop out of School because his father was unable to cater for the education needs of all of his children so Oscar was one of the lucky ones. Another sister is mentally challenged and has special care needs which their father struggles to provide.

They live in a house with two rooms at Mshomoroni which has electricity but no running water.

With the support of SAAS, Oscar completed the SAAS computer training programme and went on to complete a journalism course. When he completed his course he managed to get a job as a reporter in one of our local TV stations, Pwani TV here in Mombasa, Kenya. Through this he is able to help his family members and move them out of the poverty they have lived with for so long.
