Maths Camp 2013
Our 6th Maths Camp was initially stressful due to the school term being extended and carrying on while Maths Camp was about to take place. This worried us that we may not have many students attend but boy were we wrong. We were graced with over 500 students attending and putting us through our paces :-)
With this year's Maths Camp running from Monday 12th to Friday 16th August 2013, we also had the fortune to meet the children from Kongowea Primary. We hope that these children will soon be our future Maths Camp attendees.
Our students were supplied with the essentials for this week such as stationery and our lovely Mama Cecilia and her team made lunch for all to give everyone energy to keep going through the afternoon. We were also blessed with our SAAS Youth Group who provided our invaluable helpers to aid the teaching throughout the week.
Along with our amazing directors, Gina Woods, Henry McLoughlin and Ursula Redmond - we welcomed Cormac Phelan and Claire Harrigton from Ireland, Dharshini Allirajah, Steve Murphy, Nila Natkunan, Ajay Kemwal, Daljit Bhogal and Manjula Natkunan from the UK, and also Rustan Leino all the way from Seattle. As you can see Maths Camp's international support is growing thanks to the hard work and sweet talking of our directors.
Clare assisted Gina in tackling the largest group, Form 1 and proved herself a wonderful addition to the Maths Camp Team. Henry continued to excel at teaching Form 2 and Ursula and Cormac did an amazing job with Form 4. We had our lovely Manjula come back to impart her knowledge and wisdom on Form 3 with the help of her sister Nila and Rustan.
We had our brave Daljit take on the task of teaching Chemistry to Forms 1 & 2 and the challenge of Physics for Forms 1,2,3 & 4 by our returning tutor Dharshini with the help of our Engineers Steve & Ajay.
This year Ursula maintained a blog of maths camp.
How Maths Camp has performed over the last few years:
2008 - our very first Maths Camp attracted 80 students.
2009 - numbers increased to 120 students.
2010 - saw the expansion of Maths Camp to include Chemistry and Physics. Student numbers also swelled to over 300.
2011 - Maths and Physics were offered this year to over 350 students.
2012 - back to basics! The main focus for our 450+ students was Maths, whilst some also brushed up on Physics.
2013 - bigger than ever! A full team of tutors taught Maths, Physics and Chemistry to our eager students.
On behalf of all those who benefited from this year's Maths Camp, I would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers for making it such an amazing success. Without your time, dedication and energy events such as this would not be possible.
