Maths Camp 2011
Our 4th Maths Camp has been the most successful so far, with attendance records exceeding 350 students.
The camp ran from Monday 1st to Friday 5th August at Kongowea School in Mombasa and offered students classes in Maths and Physics. Unfortunately, due to a lack of suitable volunteers we were not able to offer Chemistry lessons this year.
Our volunteers from Ireland and the UK took on different roles for the week, with our directors Gina Woods and Henry McLoughlin leading the way.
Gina, along with volunteers Deirdre Gill and Aisling Mathews, took charge of over 100 Form 1 students. Form 2 was taught by Henry with the help of local tutors Teresa and Boniface. Dharshini Allirajah took on the arduous task of teaching physics to Forms 1, 2, 3 and 4. Whilst Ursula Redmond helped Form 4 prepare for their up-coming Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
A few attendance stats from previous years:
2008 - our very first Maths Camp attracted 80 students.
2009 - numbers increased to 120 students.
2010 - last year saw the expansion of Maths Camp to include Chemistry and Physics. Student numbers also swelled to over 300.
2011 - Maths and Physics were offered this year to over 350 students.
2012 - could you help make this our biggest year yet?
On behalf of all the students that benefited from this wonderful experience, I would like to sincerely thank all our volunteers for giving so freely of their time, energy and expertise. We hope to see you - and all your friends! - in Kenya next year.
