Who We Are

Sponsor an African Scholar is a small Irish charity who work with the poor in the city of Mombasa in Kenya. The charity is run by a group of volunteers based in Ireland who support staff on the ground in Mombasa.

The SAAS Team

Gina Woods is a senior IT consultant. She holds degrees in Computer Science from both UCD and TCD. Gina has been involved with SAAS since its inception. Gina is a director of SAAS.

Henry McLoughlin is a senior lecturer in Computer Science in UCD. He has been involved in founding a number of commercial ventures. He is currently a UCD fellow in Teaching and Academic Development. Henry is a director of SAAS.

Ursula Redmond is a UCD Computer Science graduate currently doing her PhD. She has been an active volunteer at Maths Camp for the past few years, bravely teaching the mighty Form 4. Ursula is also a director of SAAS.

Ebby Soinani is the office manager for SAAS in Mombasa. Ebby has been with SAAS since its inception, and is the face of SAAS to the students and to the community in Kongowea. Since starting with SAAS, Ebby has studied to become a qualified counsellor. She works closely with our students and their families.

Maria Nekesa was one of the first students we supported, and succeeded in obtaining a diploma in food science. Having finished her studies, Maria decided that she wanted to give something back to her community and so has been working with us for the past few years.

Michelle Doyle is a qualified Accounting Technician currently working for UCC. She is our go to girl for fundraising, publicity and spell checking. Kieran Colfer is an honours graduate in Applied Computing from Waterford IT. Whilst working full time for a games company in Cork, Kieran also finds time to be our webmaster.
